Moving Household Goods from India to Australia

Prepare household goods for an India-to-Australia move with document checks, biosecurity packing advice and a clear budget for clearance and delivery.

THE PRACTICAL CHECKLIST

Before you start

  • Review the household declaration and item restrictions before packing.
  • Clean suitable goods and make declared items easy to locate by box number.
  • Separate government charges from private handling and delivery costs.

A move from India to Australia needs more preparation than choosing a shipping date. An outdoor bicycle, a wooden keepsake and a carton of kitchen items can raise different questions at the border. Review what you plan to send while you can still clean, separate or leave items behind.

Start with your destination address and household inventory when requesting an international relocation assessment. The proposal should confirm service availability and identify who handles the Australian part of your shipment.

Prepare the declaration with the actual contents in front of you

The Australian Border Force B534 form asks about your arrival, shipment, residence circumstances and nominated representative. It also asks who packed the goods and whether you know their contents. Complete the declaration in English and review each question yourself, even when an agent assists.

The form specifically asks about recently acquired goods, commercial items, medicines, vehicles and several restricted categories. Record the requested details accurately. Do not assume that describing a consignment as household goods settles its tax treatment; have ABF or your customs representative check the applicable conditions.

Keep the signed declaration, packing list and shipping references together. Ask the person handling clearance to identify any outstanding documents before collection, so a missing record does not become a last-minute search while you are travelling.

Check, clean and label before the boxes close

Use DAFF’s personal-effects preparation guidance to identify goods needing attention. Examples include shoes, sports equipment, pet accessories, wooden belongings and food. Check current item-specific import conditions before including something uncertain.

Clean suitable items of soil, plant or animal material. Describe contents and materials on the packing list, match box numbers and record where declared items are packed. Avoid reused produce or meat cartons. Cleaning does not guarantee clearance.

As a practical packing exercise, put the inventory beside each room’s belongings and mark items for review before the packers arrive. For a wooden chair, record its material and condition rather than writing only “furniture”. Keep the list current when something is removed from the shipment. Our box-planning guide explains how to maintain one consistent numbering system.

Confirm who submits each part of clearance

Australia’s customs and biosecurity steps are distinct. DAFF’s June 2026 process notice moved the affected self-lodged biosecurity documents from email to the Cargo Online Lodgement System from 8 July 2026. It states that the ABF declaration process remains separate. Follow the current instructions for your submission method rather than an older checklist copied from another move.

Ask your representative to confirm what they submit, what you must complete and how you will receive progress updates. Save the references in a single handover note with the destination contact details.

Budget beyond freight and customs relief

DAFF’s household-goods clearance guidance explains document assessment and possible inspection. Treatment can add costs. Private depot, unpacking, transport and storage fees are separate from government biosecurity charges, even when an invoice calls them quarantine fees.

Ask for an itemised proposal showing included work, possible additional charges and who pays each provider. Record how extra costs will be explained and approved. Compare the same shipment volume and delivery access details across quotations; the quote comparison guide helps organise those questions.

Plan the final delivery as its own appointment

Keep arrival, clearance and delivery dates separate in your moving plan. Confirm the receiving address, access arrangements and available person before requesting the home-delivery appointment. Check the carton count and condition at handover, and retain any exception notes with the inventory.

The international documents and customs guide brings the origin, transport and destination responsibilities together.
