Choose bike transport by the actual vehicle, route, handling arrangement and your ability to complete collection. A motorcycle, an electric scooter and a bicycle should not receive the same preparation instructions. Describe the model and condition before requesting acceptance or a price.
Make the first decision about responsibility: do you want collection and delivery assessed together, or can you organise a journey between terminals? Then compare the methods available for that precise consignment.
Compare the available arrangements
| Method | Questions before booking |
|---|---|
| Road transport | Is pickup included, how is the vehicle restrained, and what are the delivery arrangements? |
| Railway parcel or luggage | Do the stations accept the vehicle, what preparation is required, and who completes collection? |
| Bus operator | Does this operator explicitly accept this vehicle on this route, with a receipt and suitable handling? |
| Bicycle with household goods | Is the packed bicycle listed separately, protected and accepted within the moving inventory? |
Do not assume a passenger ticket includes carriage of a cycle or motorcycle. For bus transport, get the operator’s actual acceptance conditions. A recommendation about one bus service cannot establish permission or safe space on another.
For rail, Indian Railways publishes a specific two-wheeler booking process, including the distinction between luggage and parcel. Use that official process and ask the station about any detail specific to your vehicle. Do not apply motorcycle instructions automatically to an electric bicycle.
Request a quote with useful vehicle details
Share the make, model, operating condition and any modifications. Mention a sidecar, unusually wide accessories, a heavy carrier, a windscreen or a non-running vehicle before assessment. Include photographs and both access points.
Ask whether the amount includes packing, collection, loading, transport, unloading, delivery and applicable taxes. Ask how terminal collection, waiting, rescheduling or an inaccessible address changes the scope. Keep all quotes based on the same vehicle and endpoints.
An advertised starting price is not a useful budget until those details match. Use the quote comparison checklist and avoid treating a per-kilometre number as a complete transport formula.
Prepare a motorcycle or scooter for handover
Clean enough of the vehicle to make existing scratches visible. Photograph all sides, controls, visible panels and accessories in good light. Record the odometer, fuel or charge indication and the keys handed over. Keep the inspection record with your booking acknowledgement.
Remove loose belongings and accessories that the carrier does not accept. Ask who handles mirrors or other detachable parts and how those parts will be labelled. Follow the accepted carrier’s preparation instructions and manufacturer guidance; do not perform unsafe fuel or battery work yourself.
Keep original personal documents under your control unless a specific process requires their presentation or handover. Confirm the required identity, ownership and authorisation documents before pickup, especially if someone else is releasing or receiving the vehicle.
Prepare a bicycle according to its components
Record the frame size, bicycle type and accessories. Photograph the frame, fork, wheels and existing marks. Ask whether a bicycle carton, partial dismantling or another assessed packing method is appropriate.
If components are removed, use a competent cycle technician where needed, label hardware and protect contact points. Avoid forcing handlebars, loading weight on a derailleur or allowing loose metal parts to rub the frame. Keep a parts list so collection does not end with an unexplained bag of fittings.
An e-bike’s battery changes the acceptance conversation. Declare it explicitly and follow the manufacturer and carrier instructions. A damaged or modified battery is not an ordinary household packing item.
Confirm the unloading plan as well as collection
Ask how the bike will come off the destination vehicle, who provides the appropriate equipment and whether delivery uses a different vehicle from collection. A suitable method at pickup does not confirm the last stage. Share the bike’s size, weight category and access constraints with the delivery coordinator too.
If the proposed unloading method looks unsafe, raise it before handling begins and ask the coordinator for an appropriate arrangement. Do not put yourself under a heavy vehicle or attempt to catch a falling bike. Keep photographs and written communications where safe.
If the crew leaves without giving you a delivery record, send a prompt written account stating the delivery time, condition observed and that you were not given a copy or an opportunity to record exceptions. Attach relevant photographs and request the record. This supports your account; it does not decide liability or replace an applicable claim procedure.
Inspect before completing delivery
Compare the vehicle with the collection photographs and record visible exceptions immediately. Count keys and accessories. Follow the maker’s guidance for checking roadworthiness after transport; arrange professional attention if a component appears displaced or damaged.
Retain packaging and evidence where a claim may be needed. The vehicle handover guide explains the collection and receipt record, while transit-cover questions help you check the actual policy or contract.
Common bike-transport questions
Can I send my helmet with the bike?
Ask whether it is accepted and recorded as a separate item. Do not leave unlisted belongings attached to the vehicle.
Does transport also complete an interstate registration change?
Do not assume that. Check the relevant registering authority for your circumstances. Parivahan lists the official registration forms, including address changes and NOC applications.
How do I book with Shiftify?
Share the model, route and access details through bike transportation so the team can confirm the supported arrangement and written scope.
