Local Tempo or Full-Service Movers: Compare the Whole Job

Compare a vehicle-only tempo booking with packing and moving services by labour, materials, access, responsibility and the total work you must organise.

THE PRACTICAL CHECKLIST

Before you start

  • List the packing, labour and delivery tasks before choosing transport.
  • Ask what the booking includes and what you must organise yourself.
  • Account for coordination and handling at both addresses.

A local tempo can be useful when you mainly need suitable vehicle space and can organise the remaining work. A fuller moving service can be useful when you need packing, handling and delivery coordinated. Compare the written scope of the two proposals, because the labels alone do not tell you what is included.

Start with the same inventory and addresses. A vehicle quote and a household moving quote are not directly comparable until you add the materials, labour, access and finishing tasks each one leaves to you.

Describe the job before choosing the vehicle

List the furniture, appliances, cartons and unusual items, along with both floors, lifts, stair access and carrying distances. State whether items are already packed and who will dismantle furniture. Include the loading and receiving windows.

Have the provider assess vehicle suitability from the actual load. Bedroom count and a vehicle’s marketing name do not establish usable dimensions or the appropriate loading arrangement. An extra trip can change both price and the time needed at each building.

For an intercity journey, also clarify shared or dedicated transport, transfers and the delivery window. A local pickup vehicle may be only one part of a longer transport arrangement.

Compare responsibilities line by line

Part of the job Vehicle-focused booking: ask Fuller moving service: ask
Packing Is anything supplied or packed? Which materials and special items are included?
Carrying Who loads, unloads and carries on stairs? What access conditions were priced?
Furniture Who dismantles and reinstalls it? Which named pieces are covered?
Protection How are accepted goods secured? What packing and loading plan applies?
Delivery Is the endpoint kerbside or inside the home? Does placement or unpacking form part of the scope?
Changes How are waiting and extra trips charged? How are inventory or access changes authorised?

Neither column should be filled with assumptions. A tempo provider may offer labour separately; a moving package may exclude installation. Ask for the actual accepted arrangement.

Calculate the work you would need to supply

For a vehicle-focused option, list materials, helpers, preparation time, packing skill, dismantling support and the person available at each address. Add any specialist installation or personal travel cost. Check whether helpers can safely handle the actual items and access; enthusiasm is not a substitute for appropriate equipment and experience.

If you pack yourself, use a sound inventory and carton plan and confirm acceptance of owner-packed goods. Ask about responsibility for loss or damage and any limitations related to packing.

Avoid basing the decision on one visible transport line while overlooking several separate purchases. Equally, do not pay for a package whose extra work you do not need. Ask whether a clearly defined partial service is possible.

Think about coordination and recovery

When you hire several providers, identify who takes responsibility if one arrives late. A vehicle waiting for separately hired labour can create a cost and scheduling problem. Make sure someone can contact and coordinate all parties.

With a combined service, confirm the main contact and who may approve a scope change. Ask how the team records the collection inventory and delivery exceptions. One booking is convenient only when its responsibilities are clear.

Check cancellation, rescheduling, waiting and payment terms before confirming either choice. Retain receipts and the booking acknowledgement. A low initial price does not explain the process if access fails or the load changes.

Choose according to the actual move

A few robust, prepared items with straightforward ground-floor access may need a different arrangement from an occupied family home with fragile kitchenware and several appliances. Delicate, heavy or awkward items deserve assessment even on a short route.

Local and intercity are distance categories; vehicle-only, partial and fuller service describe scope. Shared and dedicated describe transport allocation. Keep these distinctions separate so you can compare proposals without treating them as interchangeable “types of movers.”

Questions about tempos and movers

Is a tempo always the cheapest option?

Not necessarily after packing, labour, extra trips, waiting and your own time are included. Compare the complete job using the same inventory.

Can I book movers only for packing and loading?

Ask whether that limited scope is accepted and how the handover to the transport provider will be recorded. Clarify who handles the goods after collection.

Is a short move safe to do without packing?

Distance does not remove lifting, contact or restraint risks. Choose preparation appropriate to the items and handling method, even when the addresses are nearby.

Use the quote comparison guide and shared versus dedicated guide before requesting your assessed scope.
