Moving with Pets: Travel, Supervision and Arrival Checklist

Arrange pet travel separately from household goods, confirm carrier requirements, plan moving-day supervision and prepare a calm arrival space.

THE PRACTICAL CHECKLIST

Before you start

  • Arrange appropriate pet travel separately from household goods.
  • Confirm the actual provider’s acceptance and preparation requirements.
  • Assign supervision during packing, travel and arrival.

Make a separate travel plan for pets before finalising the household move. A goods vehicle is not an assumed pet transport arrangement. Decide who stays responsible for each animal during packing, travel and arrival, and confirm the actual carrier’s requirements before purchasing travel based on an expectation.

This is household-planning guidance, not a Shiftify pet transport offering. A veterinarian and the accepted travel provider should advise on the animal’s fitness, equipment and journey-specific requirements.

Start with the animal and journey

Tell your veterinarian about the proposed mode, journey length, connections, weather and your pet’s known conditions. Ask what records, preparation or follow-up are appropriate. Do not give sedatives or change medication based on a moving article; any medication decision belongs with the veterinarian.

Consider the complete journey, including travel to a terminal, waiting, collection and the final trip to the new home. A short flight can still involve a long day away from a familiar environment. Identify where the animal can safely rest and how its routine needs will be met.

Keep a copy of the pet’s records and relevant contacts with the responsible adult. For a destination outside India, obtain specialist guidance on both countries’ requirements; domestic moving advice does not establish import eligibility.

Confirm transport acceptance before booking

If flying, check the airline’s current rules for the exact itinerary and animal, including each connection. Air India’s pet travel FAQs show why confirmation matters: acceptance depends on conditions including the animal, documentation, carrier and flight arrangement. Do not use an old blog’s dimensions or fee as booking approval.

For any rail or road provider, ask directly about acceptance, equipment, the responsible handler and collection procedure. Obtain written confirmation where possible. A passenger ticket does not necessarily reserve a pet place.

Select the travel carrier with the accepted provider and veterinary guidance in mind. Give the pet appropriate time to become familiar with it before moving day rather than introducing it during the busiest part of loading.

Check the pet booking against the whole itinerary

Give the airline the animal’s species, breed, age and combined pet-and-carrier weight. Ask whether your route, connections, cabin and traveller circumstances are eligible, and get the permitted carrier confirmed before buying one. A small pet is not automatically accepted in every cabin.

Keep document validity dates beside the flight date and ask what needs repeating if travel changes. Confirm the total for all flight sectors and the pet-booking change or refund terms separately from your passenger fare. Air India’s current pet guidance sets out these route and booking distinctions; another airline can use different rules.

Keep pets away from the loading area

Open doors, unfamiliar people and noise can create escape opportunities. Arrange a secure separate space or trusted care away from the crew’s route. Tell the team where the animal is and who is responsible for it; do not rely on everyone remembering to close the same door.

Keep leads, carriers and essential supplies out of the moving load. Identify the pet’s supplies in the personal-carry list so they are not accidentally sealed into a carton. One adult should check the animal’s location before departure and at each handover.

Never leave an animal unattended in a parked vehicle. The American Veterinary Medical Association’s warm-weather guidance highlights the risk of vehicle heat and the importance of appropriate water, shade and veterinary advice for travel. Plan supervision even during short loading delays.

Pack a pet essentials kit

  • Current records and accepted travel documents, kept securely with you.
  • Familiar food, appropriate water arrangements and feeding items.
  • Usual bedding or a familiar item that is suitable for the journey.
  • Leads, harnesses or carriers appropriate to the animal and transport method.
  • Waste-cleaning supplies and any veterinarian-directed necessities.
  • Contact details for the responsible adult and a veterinary practice at the destination.

Adjust the kit to the species and actual journey. Do not treat a dog or cat checklist as suitable for birds, fish or other animals. Specialist arrangements may be needed, and tanks or enclosures must be discussed separately from their occupants.

Prepare the new home before arrival

Set up a secure, quiet area away from active unloading, with the animal’s familiar essentials. Check doors, windows and other escape routes before opening a carrier. Keep tools, packaging, chemicals and loose fittings inaccessible.

Maintain supervision while furniture is carried through the home. Introduce other rooms gradually as they become safe and usable, guided by your knowledge of the animal and any professional advice. Record any required updates to identification or local veterinary arrangements on your post-move list.

Questions about moving with pets

Can my pet travel with the household goods?

Do not assume that arrangement is available or suitable. Book appropriate pet travel separately with explicit acceptance and a responsible handler.

Should I book my own flight before confirming pet acceptance?

Confirm the pet conditions and availability for the exact itinerary first. The passenger booking and pet approval can involve different steps.

What if delivery is delayed?

Keep the pet’s immediate supplies with you and arrange suitable accommodation independently of the household load. Discuss any health or care concern with your veterinarian.

Coordinate the household schedule using the intercity checklist and first-night plan.
