Pack household belongings

What to Carry Yourself and Declare Before a Household Move

Separate personal essentials, valuables and items needing special acceptance before moving. Use a practical checklist for documents, liquids and batteries.

THE PRACTICAL CHECKLIST

Before you start

  • Set aside essentials, valuables and important documents before packing.
  • Declare items needing special acceptance to the carrier.
  • Make the personal-carry area obvious to everyone packing the home.

Before packing begins, separate belongings into three groups: items you will carry personally, ordinary goods accepted for the move, and items whose acceptance needs checking. This prevents an important document or an unsuitable substance disappearing into an unlabelled carton.

The exact restrictions depend on the carrier, transport method and item. Give the mover a complete description and obtain instructions before packing anything unusual. An item being legal to own does not mean every transport service accepts it.

Keep a personal essentials bag

Carry the items you need for travel, entry to the new home and the period before delivery. Include keys, identification, booking records, a phone charger, a change of clothes, basic toiletries and other everyday necessities.

Keep medication and medical information accessible according to your usual care plan. If something needs temperature control or other special handling, arrange that with appropriate professional guidance. A household shipment is not a substitute for that arrangement.

Store essential digital records somewhere you can access if a device or connection fails. Give the receiving person the relevant inventory and contacts, while keeping private documents out of broadly shared chat groups.

Handle jewellery and documents separately

Choose a secure personal arrangement for jewellery, cash, passports, property papers and irreplaceable keepsakes. Do not leave them in drawers that are being packed or assume ordinary household-goods cover applies to them.

For jewellery, make a private record of the pieces you intend to carry. Use individual compartments or soft pouches to prevent pieces rubbing together, and keep the container under your direct control. Avoid labels on the outside that advertise valuables. Consider specialist arrangements where personal transport is unsuitable.

Gather original documents before the packing team arrives. If a carrier needs to inspect or receive a particular document, clarify the purpose and record the handover. Otherwise, keep originals with your personal records.

Declare these categories before packing

Category Action before the moving day
LPG cylinders and fuels Ask the supplier and carrier for the permitted arrangement; do not pack as ordinary goods
Paints, solvents and strong cleaners Give the exact product details and obtain acceptance instructions
Batteries and battery-powered equipment Declare battery type, condition and device; follow maker and carrier guidance
Food, plants and perishables Confirm whether accepted and how timing or leakage would be managed
Sharp tools and fragile specialist items Arrange suitable protection and identify them clearly
Pets and other animals Make a separate travel plan with the relevant professionals and operator

Do not empty chemicals into unmarked containers, mix leftover products or hide a restricted item inside an ordinary carton. Keep product labels and instructions available for the acceptance discussion.

Plan live plants separately from empty pots

List each live plant separately, with a photograph, approximate height, pot material and weight. Tell the team about trailing growth, brittle branches or a heavy planter. Confirm acceptance and the actual travel arrangement before treating a plant as ordinary furniture; an empty ceramic pot needs a different plan from a living plant in soil.

Discuss the journey length, loading waits and when someone will receive the plants. Obtain species-specific care advice from a nursery or horticultural professional rather than applying one watering or pruning rule to every plant. If the proposed arrangement is unsuitable, plan separate transport or leave the plant with a willing recipient before packing day.

For an overseas move, ask the destination authority about live plants, soil and plant materials before packing. Acceptance on a domestic road move does not establish import permission. Start with the destination checks in our international guide.

Transport rules are specific to the service

Indian Railways publishes its prohibited-articles guidance. India Post also lists items prohibited in domestic mail, including dangerous substances. These are useful reminders that acceptance changes with the transport system; neither list is a universal household-mover policy.

Ask the actual road carrier for its restrictions. Disclose a damaged battery, leaking container or item with an unknown substance rather than trying to make it acceptable through extra wrapping. Follow an appropriate specialist disposal or transport route where needed.

If an item is declined, remove it from the moving inventory and make a clear separate plan. Do not leave that decision until loading is underway.

For an overseas move, check your personal flight baggage separately from the household shipment. Airline acceptance does not establish cargo acceptance. The international documents and customs guide explains the distinction and links to current passenger guidance.

Make the packing-day separation visible

Use one closed bag or a clearly designated area for belongings that will travel with you. Tell everyone helping with the move that this area is excluded from packing. Keep an inventory of the separately carried bags as well as the shipment.

Check drawers, bedside tables, bathrooms and charging points before the rooms are packed. Confirm that keys and the signed handover documents remain accessible. Walk through the old home once more before departure.

At the new home, unpack the essentials deliberately before opening every carton. The first-night checklist helps you identify what is needed immediately and what can wait.

Questions about excluded and personal items

Can I leave valuables in a locked drawer?

Keep valuables under your own secure arrangement. A locked drawer is still part of furniture being handled and does not establish insurance acceptance.

Can the team decide about a cylinder on moving day?

Raise it before booking. Supplier instructions and carrier acceptance may require a separate arrangement that cannot be resolved at loading time.

Should every liquid be thrown away?

No. Identify each product, check acceptance and plan safe use, carriage or disposal as appropriate. An ordinary toiletry and a flammable solvent need different decisions.
