What to Do When the Lift Is Unavailable on Moving Day

Resolve access instructions, assess alternatives and record the changed plan when your society lift cannot be used.

A lift is available in the building, so the move looks straightforward. Then the guard says it cannot be used for furniture, the reserved slot is missing, or the equipment is out of service. The next step is to clarify the restriction and agree a workable handling plan before more goods are carried into the entrance.

A building-access problem involves the resident, building management and moving team. Giving all three the same information is more useful than leaving the crew to negotiate at the gate.

Find out what is actually preventing access

Ask the person responsible for the building whether the issue is a missing reservation, required protection, a restriction on particular goods, a timing conflict or an equipment problem. Request the instruction and the contact who can confirm the next step.

If you had approval, show the confirmation and ask management to resolve the mismatch with the guard. Keep the crew supervisor informed. An approval message helps explain what was arranged, but it does not make an unsafe or unavailable lift usable.

If the equipment appears faulty, report it to building management or its maintenance provider. Do not ask movers to test the lift with a heavy load.

Separate permission from physical suitability

Permission is one check; fitting the goods and staying within the equipment's limits are others. Furniture can fit inside the cabin but fail at the entrance or corridor turn. Share the dimensions and route photographs from your survey rather than deciding by eye while the item is being carried.

Follow the building and equipment instructions. KONE's lift safety guidance warns against exceeding capacity and blocking doors with objects or body parts. Use the proper door control and an approved arrangement. A blanket hung over a door is not a solution to a loading restriction.

A different service lift may be an option if management confirms access and the mover assesses the route. Do not assume all lifts in the property have the same dimensions, capacity or permitted use.

Have the stairs assessed before agreeing to them

If the proposed alternative is stair carrying, ask the supervisor to assess the actual items, floors, landings and turns. The method, crew and time may differ from the original plan. Confirm what is feasible and have any revised work and cost recorded before it begins.

A request for more money does not itself establish that a difficult carry is safe or possible. Equally, a quote based on lift access may need review when that access changes. Ask for a specific explanation tied to the changed work.

Keep household members clear of the handling route. Do not make an improvised customer-assisted lift or a window movement the fallback. Oversized items may need a separate specialist assessment and permission.

Choose the next workable step

If access cannot be resolved in the current slot, ask what can realistically happen next: another permitted slot, an assessed alternative route, or a separately agreed holding or storage arrangement. Check availability, responsibility and cost before accepting an option.

Explain any old-home handover deadline and whether the goods are still inside, already loaded or at the destination. Those situations need different plans. If goods have already been unloaded into a common area, agree where they can remain safely and who is responsible while the issue is resolved.

Do not treat a lobby or parked vehicle as agreed storage. Keep exits and common routes clear, and make sure the receiver understands the revised arrangement.

Keep the extra work easy to reconcile

Record when access was refused, the instruction received, the people contacted and the solution agreed. Separate a building payment or deposit from a moving charge. Ask for the relevant receipt and any conditions for returning a deposit.

If you disagree with an added moving charge, request its calculation against the accepted scope. Keep the dispute factual and use the moving-problems guide if it remains unresolved.

For the next address, send a short confirmation to everyone involved: permitted gate, lift or assessed route, moving slot, required protection and a named building contact. The apartment preparation checklist helps you obtain those answers before collection.
